Distant Waves

Edison Vs Tesla; The Impossible is Always Possible.

In “Distant Waves” A Novel of the Titanic by Suzanne Weyn, was originally published in 2009. Weyn shows the story of a family that meets the great “visionary and engineer Nikolas Tesla.” The story shows five energetic girls and a mother with a gift that can communicate with the spirit world. At the beginning of chapter 2, the girls’ father died and the mother was left alone struggling to get by with her children. The family remains in New York City, and when the entire building where they lived begins to vibrate, all the buildings around them tremble. The family almost dies due to an earthquake caused by an invention carried out by Nikolas Tesla; It was made while Tesla was working in his lab on Houston Street. This was where the family met Tesla. This essay on “Distant Waves” by Suzanne Weyn will focus on the rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla; inventions and attitudes for being the biggest and most powerful in the industry.

Nikola Tesla was carrying out an experiment and a new vibration invention on the streets of Houston. Tesla was checking if his new experiment worked, which was successful. This caused a lot of atrocities because everything around him vibrated. Although, it was not finished yet as it needed more development. According to chapter 3 of “Distant Waves” by Weyn, “It is my latest experiment: an electromechanical oscillator, a vibratory mechanism.” Nikola Tesla wanted to check the vibration patterns of the outer buildings, clarifying that generally “everything vibrates.” His main theme was based on vibration, in which he communicated that “vibration is the key to the universe and even the earth could split in two if given the right vibrations.” Tesla’s concepts were very advanced, featuring extreme safety and intelligence. Nikola Tesla dreamed up his invention, fought for it, and made it come true until he could see good results.

Nikola Tesla made many inventions, one of which was that he illuminated entire cities with electric light that worked with alternating currents. Tesla harnessed the power of Niagara Falls to perform this action. Nikola Tesla claims that if he had done it Edison’s way he would have been more harmful. According to “Destin Waves” by Weyn, “If they had done it Edison’s way, with direct current, it would have required a power plant for every mile. Those plants run on coal.” Tesla lets us understand that Edison’s method was not adequate, since Tesla did not consider it very suitable for our environment. Due to the miles traveled with these coal-fired plants; these would do a lot of damage to our air. Edison’s method would have polluted the environment, and I agree with Tesla on this point because it pollutes our environment even more and this is one of the reasons why it happens and how we deal with global warming. In addition, we would have less healthy air which will affect our health. On the other hand, Tesla claims that Edison invents, while he discovers what is there but has yet to be discovered; and tries to air it out. One of the main reasons why the rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla began; This is when Tesla first came to the United States from Austria-Hungary, where he worked for Edison. Tesla said, “He offered me fifty thousand dollars to revamp his generators and machinery. Do you know what kind of laboratory I could have set up with fifty thousand dollars? So I did what he asked…” Tesla has the ambition to get ahead and progress with what he loves to do as much as setting up a great laboratory. Tesla put a lot of effort into doing that project, even though he was very exhausted. Unfortunately, when he finishes his job, Edison cheats him out of paying him nothing. Edison’s words were; “You don’t understand our American humor.” This was enough for Tesla to quit. Tesla suffered a lot and was short of supplies since what he had done cost him a lot of work and in the end, he did not get anything in return. In addition to immigrating to the United States to progress and have better opportunities. Edison was unaware of this, which he did not care about, and even laughed at Tesla. From my point of view, Edison was always the bad guy: he did great damage to Tesla; While this didn’t stop Nikolas Tesla, he continued to fight and began his rivalry with Edison.

The two geniuses Nikolas Tesla and Edison are known for their great inventions. Both rivals are cunning, with great fluidity in what they do. Thomas Edison was a man who can commercialize inventions and turn them into great business powers. Nikolas Tesla was the inventor of alternating current, this proved to be a very advanced and effective technology for electrical transmission. Edison’s exploits towards Tesla were the cause of this rivalry. The rivalry over alternating current versus direct current. Finally, Tesla’s words, “The impossible is always possible.” It leaves a lot to talk about because if you have a goal to fight for, you must move forward regardless of the difficulties you encounter along the way.
